How to Figure Out Square Feet

Easy methods for rooms, houses, walls and plots of land, with real examples.

Square feet is the number everyone asks about when they buy a home, rent a flat, choose flooring or plan a renovation. Yet many people are not sure how to figure it out. The method is simple: measure, multiply and, if needed, convert.

This guide shows you how to figure out square feet for almost any space, from a small bathroom to a full plot of land.

The Core Idea

Square feet measures area, which is the amount of flat surface a space covers. To find it, you need two measurements in feet and one multiplication. Everything else in this guide is a variation on that idea.

Figure Out Square Feet of a Square or Rectangle

Square feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Example: A hall is 15 ft long and 10 ft wide.
15 × 10 = 150 sq ft

If your measurements are in inches, multiply them and divide by 144. If they are in feet and inches, convert the inches to a decimal first (6 inches = 0.5 ft).

Figure Out Square Feet of a House or Flat

For a full home, do not try to measure everything as one big shape. Follow these steps instead:

  1. Sketch a rough floor plan on paper.
  2. Measure each room, hallway and balcony separately.
  3. Calculate the area of each space.
  4. Add all the areas together.
Example:
Living room: 18 × 14 = 252 sq ft
Bedroom: 12 × 11 = 132 sq ft
Kitchen: 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft
Bathroom: 8 × 5 = 40 sq ft
Total = 504 sq ft

Property listings often mention carpet area, built-up area and super built-up area. Carpet area is the usable floor space inside the walls. Built-up area adds the thickness of walls and balconies. Super built-up area adds a share of common areas such as lobbies and stairs. Always check which one a listing uses before comparing prices.

Figure Out Square Feet of a Wall

Wall area matters for painting, wallpaper and tiling.

Wall area = Height (ft) × Width (ft)

For a whole room, calculate each wall, add them together, then subtract doors and windows.

Example: A room is 12 ft × 10 ft with 9 ft high walls.
Wall area = 2 × (12 × 9) + 2 × (10 × 9) = 216 + 180 = 396 sq ft
Subtract one door (21 sq ft) and one window (12 sq ft): 396 − 33 = 363 sq ft

Figure Out Square Feet of Triangles and Circles

Example: A triangular corner has a base of 8 ft and a height of 6 ft.
½ × 8 × 6 = 24 sq ft

Figure Out Square Feet of a Plot of Land

For a regular rectangular plot, the formula is the same: length × width. A plot that is 30 ft by 40 ft is 1,200 sq ft.

Land is often sold in other units, so conversion is useful. One acre equals 43,560 sq ft, and one square yard (also called a gaj) equals 9 sq ft.

Example: A plot of 200 square yards = 200 × 9 = 1,800 sq ft

For plots with uneven boundaries, divide the land into triangles and rectangles, or ask a surveyor for an exact measurement before you buy.

To convertDo this
Square meters to square feetMultiply by 10.764
Square yards (gaj) to square feetMultiply by 9
Square inches to square feetDivide by 144
Acres to square feetMultiply by 43,560
Square feet to square metersDivide by 10.764

Converting many measurements by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. The square footage calculator does it in one step.

Figure Out Price Per Square Foot

Once you know the area, you can compare prices fairly.

Price per sq ft = Total price ÷ Total square feet
Example: A flat costs ₹45,00,000 and has 900 sq ft.
45,00,000 ÷ 900 = ₹5,000 per sq ft

The same formula works for tiles, flooring and paint. If you know the rate per square foot, multiply it by the area to get the total cost.

Tips for Accurate Measuring

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to figure out square feet?

Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. For example, 15 ft × 10 ft = 150 sq ft.

How do I figure out square feet of a house?

Calculate the area of each room separately and add them together. Include hallways and other spaces if you want the total floor area.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

One square yard equals 9 square feet.

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre equals 43,560 square feet.

How do I figure out price per square foot?

Divide the total price by the total area in square feet.

Final Thoughts

Figuring out square feet comes down to one habit: measure in feet, multiply, and add up the parts. Once you have that, you can handle rooms, walls, houses and land with confidence.
